I SEE YOU

Judge 1:This shot is almost a duplicate of one that appeared on the cover of National Geographic a few years back. What an awesome little animal!! The background is perfect and highlights the subject. I love it!! I have no criticisms. Tis a great shot!!! Judge 2:The diagonal of the branch is very well placed in the frame along with the eyes of the frog. Using the wide aperture to remove detail from the background is an effective technique to isolate the subject. It seems to be underexposed by a quarter to one-half stop. Judge 3:Excellent. Couldn't you have gotten the frog to smile or dance?

Pillars of Strength

Judge 1:This shot isn't appealing and the subject is too bland; it tells me nothing. To capture shadows and lines you have to either see a texture or create depth by using light. Neither were done. I think this shot would have been much more interesting in person. Try to widen or crop before taking and choose the more interesting angle. Judge 2:The pillar on the right rises into a shadow where all detail is lost. It would be better if there was some idea of the strength that it has to support whatever is up there in the shadow. From a compositional standpoint, the image has two pillars. Working with two's can be done, but three's are easier and more powerful. Judge 3:Interesting image.Slight blur probably due to camera shake detracts from the impact.

After the Rain

Judge 1:Van Gogh or Monet would have been proud. The color in the foreground gives highlight to the duller background, yet takes nothing away from it. Awesome composition!! Judge 2:Nice scenic and good composition. After the rain the light is often less bright and colors lose some of their vibrancy. The red flowers on the fence are a really nice element, and could really stand out with a fill flash. The creek is a good leading line to the ocean and the trees on either side frame it nicely. Judge 3:Nice scenic that really creates the mood. I would like to have seen more foreground and less sky blowout.

Judge 1:The power of the water tells the story, but the frame is too wide. Crop and darken a bit to enhance the 'power'. Nice idea. Judge 2: Good capture of the moment. Woman anchors the scale nicely and good overall composition.

After The Workout

Judge 1:The capture is wonderful! The mist and lighting is perfect! I would have liked to see details in the horse's face more. But othewise…..great!!! This would have been a GREAT black & white!! Judge 2:Getting the backlight in the water and hose has impact, but the loss of detail in the shadows leaves only the water. The image is well framed, and has energy. Judge 3:Nice light effect through the spray. You need to pay attention to what is in the light - the hose and rope are too prominent here. Woman could be in better position and there could be a little more fill on horse's head and neck.

Old New Mexico Truck

Judge 1:It's funny how some things capture our attention. I'm sure the shiny GMC emblem got you, and you wondered how it stayed so bright when all around it rusted? Me too! A macro of the emblem and some of the rust would have given this shot more snap. Nice idea however... Judge 2:It is interesting how the image is almost perfectly divided into quadrants, yet it works because scratches in the hood act as leading lines to the GMC medal and so does the flare at the lowest chrome trim piece pointing upward. Judge 3:Super color and texture in this image.

Porthole with a View.

Judge 1:I like the framing of the shot using the port hole. Be careful with this type of shot in that it can be seen as too 'flat'. Some wall would have explained more. Super! Judge 2:I think the composition could be improved by cropping it to square. The image is underexposed about one-half stop. Increasing the exposure would make it little more evident that this is shot through a porthole, and would add detail to the bridge. Judge 3:Nice vantage point for shot of river. I prefer it not to be head on --move to side or up to get scene within the circle more interesting.

Judge 1:What a pretty flower. Watch your DOF and make sure that you don't shoot directly down into the subject. Use angles. Flowers are tougher than they seem to be. Judge 2:The center of the flower is positioned well in the frame, but is not in focus. With the yellow ring in the center it seems that it could be very interesting but it needs a little more light. This can be tricky when the petals in the second and third layers have plenty of light. Perhaps a small amount of light reflected into the center of the flower would give it the exposure it needs. Strong composition, but I am not sure if enough of the image is in focus. Also bottom half is in shadow. My eye goes to the top third of the image (which is highlight and maybe in focus). In this tight crop I would have preferred the majority of the flower lit and in focus.

Reflections

Judge 1:The reflections are beautiful. The problem with a shot like this is, "Which one do I cut in half with the edge of the picture?" Groups of three and smaller groups make better shots. Simple is better. Nice color. Judge 2:The reflection adds a nice touch and the composition is framed to show only the subject. You might get away with additional exposure of about a quarter of a stop. If there was a place to move to the right of where the camera was it could enhance the diagonal line created by the lily pads. Judge 3:Beautiful and soothing subject, composition, and color. Bravo.
