View To Clear Lake

Judge 1:The colors are mind-numbing, but something is lost in the depth of the shot. It almost looks 'flat'. I think that the beauty of this shot was seeing it, not taking a picture of it. If it could have been framed with perhaps, plants on either side, it would have been much more appealing. Judge 2:Using the more panoramic format was a good creative choice. The saturation of the colors are a good part of the images impact. Having the lack of detail in the shadows of the distant shoreline piques my curiosity and makes me want to see what is over there. Judge 3:Beautiful Florida waterscape. Makes me want to go fishing.

Twin Falls, Yankee Boy Basin

Judge 1:This shot was taken from the perfect angle. My eye is drawn to the center of the shot and the background lends itself into the picture to enhance it even more. The DOF is perfect, but a wider shot would have brought the waterfall's linear appearance out even more. Judge 2:This is good example of foreground, middle ground, and background. Compositionally and technically excellent. Judge 3:Gorgeous image. Great perspective, composition, background, et al.

Log House in Escalante

Judge 1:I like everything about this shot but the fact that the orange 'mountain' takes away from the subject of the barn. If there was some way to get the barn to block some of the excessive color, it would have been a much more appealing shot. I like it. Judge 2:The log house is an interesting subject and I would like to see more of it. I want to know its story. Cropping at the bottom and top would help. The left side of the house loses detail in the shadow. Perhaps a little detail could be gained with some dodging. I like strong color saturation but in this instance the red rock competes with the house. Judge 3:Great exposure in harsh lighting. Also beautiful composition.

Outside The Festival

Judge 1:The inter-action of the people in the foreground could have been displayed and brought to the front by cropping the picture tighter. I like the use of lines and angles. The emotion from the faces would have made this a much more interesting photograph. Judge 2:I am interested in the people in the foreground and had to work to find the festival. If the image were cropped just above the clouds, a little to the left of the water tower, and a 15%-20% above the bottom, we would get more of the couple and the festival without cropping a meaningful element. There is a loss of detail in the shadows on the woman on the sea wall. Judge 3:This compitation needs work especially with the woman.

Liquid Iron

Judge 1:Many times it's the little things that take away from a shot. The hot spots (top and bottom middle) draw my eyes away from a very interesting shot. That always isn't the case however, which is what makes taking superb photographs so difficult. The 'hot' face to the far right tells a story. The story is, there are tougher jobs out there than the one I'm doing! Good capture!!! Judge 2:Very strong impact. Minimal improvement to the composition could be made if we saw more of the person on the far right. Either pan right slightly, back the camera away, or zoom out. Other than that I don't think it could be made better. Judge 3:Dramatic, but lacking subject - is it the oven? Focusing on one of the men might have been more interesting.

Battered Lady

Judge 1:The background takes away from the shot. Also the title doesn't really explain the situation. I was left wondering, "battered, how??" Titles sometimes win or lose a tight competition. Pay attention to all the details. Judge 2:I am confused by the title of the image. However, the composition is well done with the angle of the mannequin that leads to just beyond the mid point of the frame for the eyes. It is well exposed and the use of selective focus is appropriate. Judge 3:Interesting subject, great colors and composition. Superbly executed.

City Dawn

Judge 1:The photographer clearly knows how to capture long exposures. The angle leads your eye to the lit up building perfectly. A little less sky in the shot brings the subject closer and makes it more personal. Nice!! Judge 2:The composition using the dock as both a foreground element and the leading lines to the skyline across the lake is very effective. Getting up early to catch the light of this magic hour is both creative and admirably ambitious. Judge 3:Nice image. I would have cropped out most of the sky tried a wider angle lens.

Lilly pads

Judge 1:There is no one subject in this shot. That in and of itself is not always important, but the edges of the pads are so intricate, perhaps a closer inspection would bring a better result. Judge 2:There are three lily pads in the upper half of the image that make a diagonal line. I would prefer the image were horizontal so that it captured all of the middle one and more of the third. "Threes" work well. Exposure of this image is dead on. Judge 3:Nice image technically. Compositionally, I feel outward tension -- the subjects are in the outskirts and I am looking for something to be in that water near the middle.

Snowbird

Judge 1:To capture the essence of a 'snowbird' you will need to concentrate on more than just the subject. What other items could define the subject? I see none. Also, watch the background for items that bi-sect the subject. Create a different angle. Judge 2:The use of the vanishing point is very effective. It is also well placed in the frame. It would be better if the woman were a little more to the right in the frame. Exposure and depth of field help to tell the story of how long this beach is. Judge 3:Colorful and Fun composition. Maybe crop a little off right and top.
