Poised For Flight
Judge 1:Thinking outside the box (literally), makes this common subject much more interesting! Though nit-picky I would have liked to see the antenna up, instead of down. Nice capture and very creative! Judge 2:I like the somewhat minimalist approach to the composition. The selective focus helps that. It would be better if the butterfly and the flowers were move moved to the right. Exposure and focus are dead on. It seems that the lower edges of the butterfly's wings are too sharp. If this is the composite I suspect it is, perhaps a slight amount of feathering in the selection of the butterfly would make it look more natural. Judge 3:Beautiful forground and background. I think the digital matting was supposed to emphasize the butterfly, but does the opposite for me.

Water Lily and Bud
Judge 1:A very common subject typically, but the proper use of DOF (depth of field) combined with the excellent composition make it a great shot! It makes you want to look at it again and again. The white reflection in the water take away some from the subject, but not enough to complain loudly. Judge 2:It is a treat to find these scenes. This is one of those cases where using the backlight is tricky. It gives a nice glow to the petals, but leads to underexposing other parts of the flower. The yellow center of the flower is worth seeing more of, and it could have been made more prominent with a little dodging. Judge 3:Nice image except that the Lily (subject) is shaded while the rest of image is bright. Prefer that the bud were not there - it draws my attention away from the lily.

Wind In Her Hair
Judge 1:The angle on this shot takes away from it. Though the wall behind the waterfall is quite beautiful, I found myself wishing that it was more of a straight-on shot, rather than from this angle, so that the picture became whole. When you have a shot this compelling, take if from all angles. One will be better than all the rest. Judge 2:In general, compositions where the subject is essentially a line like this waterfall, that it should be positioned so that it neither starts or stops in the center of the frame. If the top of this waterfall were positioned a little more to the right, it would not only make it a little more dramatic but would reduce or eliminate the bright light on the rocks in the top right hand corner. Judge 3:Rocks are beautiful but water slightly washed out.

Sailing Mast
Judge 1:If you crop a shot too tightly, the subject can't be fully appreciated. This rigging is probably on a very beautiful boat. In this case, the ropes aren't enough to tell a story. Judge 2:When I see these vessels I am intrigued by the complexity of the rigging, and this image captures that complexity. That complexity is the very thing that makes composition a challenge here. We need to see pattern, shape, or form to capture or eye. This is a difficult exposure to make and it was done well. Judge 3:Compositionally correct confluence of converging lines and colors. But that is it for me.

Family
Judge 1:When black & white is done correctly, the story is told loudly. Great idea. Great set-up. Super shot!! Judge 2:I scored the creativity high on this because it seems to be more planned than spontaneous. The composition could have been improved by panning the camera to the left a little to remove some of the corn and get a little more of the horse. The real power in this picture is the interaction of the woman with the horse and is best seen in her hand on its nose. The time of day put that in a fairly deep shadow. Maybe a fill flash could have evened the light at the time of the shot or little dodging could boost its prominence now. The choice to make this black and white was another good use of creativity. Judge 3:Touching image. Light is a little harsh.Woman's dress blends in too much with background - needs more black and white. Also opening up the aperture would help lessen the sharp, in-focus background.

The Hand of Freedom
Judge 1:I'm not sure just what the point is? I want to understand the significance, but it's lost because it's cropped too close. Showing some of the ground explains more of the subject. In this case, wider is better. Judge 2:The juxtaposition of the bird in flight as a symbol of freedom and the fence as a symbol of confinement in the scene with this sculpture is powerful. I expect that there had to be a tradeoff between shutter-speed for the bird and depth of field for the barbed wire, but to the extent that both could be had, a sharper barbed wire would add even more impact to the image. Judge 3:I like the composition with fence diagonal.Although the bird may add meaning, it distracts my attention away from the subject.

The American Horse
Judge 1:This shot could have been made much more interesting if the woman in the photo, did something other than just stand there. Perhaps a shot of the horse from underneath, which would have been a perspective that not many people would have thought of. Also watch dissecting the subject with background items. Judge 2:Using a scale element (the woman) to show the size of the subject adds impact to this image. The exposure is correct and reveals the details in the shadows of the mane and tail. Judge 3:I think we have all seen and taken travel photos of a person standing next to a large statue and most of mine have been pathetically unsuccessful. This has to be one of the best such shots I have seen. Excellent composition, lens choice, lighting, exposure, background.

Photographer Unknown
sub digit mono pod
Judge 1:The use of different lines in the blinds, steps, floor, give this shot a surreal quality. Shots that have a lot of subjects or subject matter to peruse tend to make the observer's eye wander. I like the use of lighting and this shot was much harder to take that many would know. Good technique. Judge 2:The composition could be improved by making being loser to the woman, and cropping the back of the SUV as well as the top of the picture. It would still achieve the edgy look intended by use of the method used for selective focus. Interesting blur effect. Image has too much contrast. I am also a beam-me-up or two short of understanding it.

Sandy Rache
Judge 1:It's hard not to like this photograph! The little girl is cute, cute, cute, and the sand on her face brings back fond memories of days at the beach. However, there is nothing to tell me that this isn't a typical point-and-shoot shot. There is nothing wrong with that, but it could have been much better if the photographer moved back and took a half body shot. Try to frame the face. Don't just fill the frame. Judge 2:The location of the eyes in the top third of the fame along with the diagonal line they are on makes this a strong composition and allows the eyes to get my attention in spite of the blown out area to the right. Well done. Judge 3:Fun shot although a hint of a smile might have made it a little more phun. Too bad the hair across the right eye obstructs the window to her soul.
